Perhaps one part destiny and two parts luck; your resolve has finally brought you to the Japanese mainland. While marveling at the sights and inviting smiles of the locals, your appetite awakens prompting you to seek a meal. Or you unfortunately did not make it to Japan yet but still want to indulge in some Japanese culture. What will you eat? Where will you dine?

As chance and centuries of tradition yield, Japanese Food Culture embodies wonderment, zest, and sumptuous styled multiple-course meals.

During the Edo and Sakoku (locked country) eras (1600 – 1868), the character of Japanese cuisine reached consummate levels of sophistication. Through profound religious influences of Buddhism and the Shinto faith, meals are symbolic; featuring five distinct flavors and colors. The tastes of sweet, spicy, sour, salty, and bitter, and visions of red, green, yellow, black, and white, fuse skillfully into three main cooking styles – that of Honzen Ryori (Formal/Elaborate Banquet), Chakaiseki Ryori (Tea Ceremony), and Kaiseki Ryori (Artistic Presentation). A fourth style, Shojin Ryori (Vegetarian) developed by Buddhist monks, has come to include some non-vegetarian elements.

Typical Japanese cuisine couples the staple foods of gohan (white Japanese rice) and noodles, with soup, tsukemono (pickled vegetables), and an array of savory okazu (side dishes); with a standard meal being ichiju-sansai (one soup with three side dishes).

As an island nation, many dishes incorporate the abundance of various types of freshwater seafood including finned fish, shellfish, crab, roe, sea mammals, and seaweed. Cooking techniques may vary from raw (sashimi), to simmered, grilled, steamed, deep-fried, or dressed. Various green teas are ubiquitous to Japan and are sipped as the perfect after mealtime beverage.

Ambiance, presentation, and table etiquette all play prominent roles in Japanese cuisine. Together, each converges to define a particular harmony; pleasing to the palate, and enjoyed visually as a work of art. Arrangement, placement, color, the influence of the seasons, and choice of receptacles are all strategic. How one holds his bowl or chopsticks, partakes from a communal receptacle, or receives a tablemate’s kind gesture of keeping his cup full, create a relaxed and pleasing dining experience. As a grateful guest, you will impart itadakimasu “I humbly receive,” before consuming the meal, and gochisosama deshita “This was a feast,” in praise of the host, before leaving.

Experience the elite of Japanese Food Culture, while dining abroad in some of the world’s most favored Japanese restaurants.

We all have seen the awful images in Manila by the typhoon “Ondoy” (Ketsana) and I am hoping everybody is safe now.

PlanetAbroad in the past was fortunate enough to work with a range of Filipino freelancers. Their continuous efforts are helping to build PlanetAbroad step by step.

By consequence, I feel a high level of responsibility to support the wonderful people of the Philippines in these tough times. Countless of my friends have had awful hours desperately trying to reach friends and relatives to check their well-being. One of our freelancer’s husband was trapped in a car all night long due to the flooding. These are just small pieces of a huge catastrophe. To play our part in helping to rebuild and ease the pain we have decided to donate all of PlanetAbroad’s revenues until Sunday the 25th of October.

Donations will be transferred to “The Philippine National Red Cross” as they are a proven and trusted source of support.

So how exactly does this work? Every time you book a trip online instead of going straight to the websites like hotels.com or zuji.com you visit through the following links:

PlanetAbroad gets a commission of the trips you book. In most cases this money is transferred upon check-in (at the hotel, flight etc.). As soon as we receive the money we will transfer it to the Philippine National Red Cross.

So, to cut a long story short, simply by going through one of the above links when booking trips you can help a beautiful nation terribly hit by a natural disaster!

Thank you very much in advance, we highly appreciate it.

Evolving steadily since attaining cultural significance during 15th century Renaissance, modern French Cuisine, and the accompanying accoutrements, not only satisfy the palate, but also please the eye.

An invigorating fusion of wine, food, and traditional exploits, French Food Culture has emerged a bona fide “social theater”; akin to any Fine Art. Complete with elaborate and strategic presentations, display and composition are as integral to such Haute and Nouvelle cuisines as the ingredients themselves.

Tabletops are virgin canvas adorned with processions of appetizers and main courses. Meals are consumed in a leisure yet devoted style promoting both, familial bonding and spirited social revelry. The traditions and loving rituals, with which each meal is prepared, make French cuisine and the resulting culture nothing short of edible Art.

Formal courses are unique and unaided; each giving way to its successor in the following order: Hors D’oeuvres, The Fish Course, The Main Course, The Salad Course, The Cheese Plate, and lastly The Sweet Desert Course. Fresh breads, a traditional French meal’s mainstay, are present throughout each course.

Traditionally served first, “Outside of the Main Course or Works,” hors d’oeuvres are basic yet simple, and cleverly designed to stimulate the appetite. Aperitifs (small palate-arousing cocktails) may also accompany this first course.

A Fish Course will sometimes follow hors d’oeuvres and be lavishly garnished with an assortment of vegetables. Afterwards, a small dish of citrus-flavored sorbet is consumed to cleanse the palate; giving way to the main course.

Arriving at the Main Course, one will find an elaborate meat or poultry dish; again garnished with vegetables crafted for display by culinary prowess.

Next, a simple Salad Course of tossed greens with vinaigrette is served; whose purpose is to again cleanse the palate, and aid in digestion.

A bastion of French Cuisine; a selection of cheeses are then served on a wooden board (The Cheese Plate) amid a bevy of fresh cut fruits.

Lastly, the Sweet Dessert Course may be served for a special occasion. This course is an ornately decorated treat; rich and indulgent to taste, and served with freshly brewed café.

French cuisine implores you to Dine Abroad and experience Le Cuisine Francois (The True French Cook) first-hand, in one of many sophisticated eateries of the region.
